A renovation of a home in Charlottesville, Virginia creates expansive spaces while remaining within the existing building footprint.  Skylights transform a former attic space into a primary suite, washing walls with natural light and framing views of the surrounding tree canopies and sky.

The addition of a shower and skylight to an existing half bath transforms it into a light-filled space that elevates a daily ritual.  In the warmer months, the operable skylight opens the space up to the outdoors, connecting users to the surrounding birdsong and breeze.

The addition of a series of sliding doors opens the rear exterior wall to the backyard, linking the previously separate kitchen and dining areas to an outdoor patio and garden. Oak millwork wraps the interior walls, bringing warmth and a sense of cohesion to the newly unified space.  Honed Infinity Blue Quartzite countertops extend seamlessly up to form the backsplash, drawing subtle hues from the surrounding landscape and further anchoring the interior to its context.

Within the kids room, a custom bunk bed serves as library, loft, and ladder, connecting bedroom below to attic above.  This formerely unusable volume of space is converted into a cozy refuge - a secluded perch among the roof rafters with a view out to the trees.
